Plant-based leather is the most environmentally-friendly choice, at least for now, but there are few products using it. There are numerous reasons not to use animal leather, such as the fact that most animal leather is a waste product. 

Fortunately there are products in the pipeline which would alleviate many of the problems with the leather materials now on the market.
